Townsend Warbler Orange-Crowned Warbler Wonderful Warblers "There are many species of warblers. Most are yellow of varying brightnesses. Males of each species are usually brighter coloured - distinctive & easier to tell apart. The females are more quietly coloured. Three species of warblers nest and bring up their babies on Haida Gwaii. Townsend Warblers wear black masks on their yellow faces. Wilson's Warblers wear black caps. You may guess that Orange Crowned warblers are just as easy to distinguish. But actually, it's only in springtime in mating time, that you can catch sight of that bright orange on top of the heads. And then, when it's time to be bringing up babies, they try to escape attention and people seldom catch sight of them. But orange-crowned warblers are often nearby, helping us catch bugs, many of which feast on garden goodies." -K.D. Shorebirds "These migrant visitors are taking their rest on Haida Gwaii. Are their hearts elsewhere? Or do they glory in the freedom of their flying...and enjoy stopping again on the islands where they know they can rest, eat and recover strength and regain heart for another long flight?" -K.D.
