PALS (Parents, Grandparents, Aunties, Uncles, and Caregivers as Literacy Supporters) is a province-wide family literacy program which has been offered in Haida Gwaii’s Kindergarten and K/1 classes since 2004. PALS strengthens the connection between home and school by welcoming you into the classroom for five sessions during the year. One-on-one activities with your child will build on what you are already doing at home to support his or her learning. Each session will start with a time for you to meet with other parents over a cup of coffee/tea and chat about the day’s theme.
PALS is set up so that every child will have an adult to work with. We recognize that many parents work – Grandparents, Aunties, Uncles, Older Siblings and Adult Friends are always welcome to participate when parents are unavailable.
Here’s what some participants have recently said about PALS:
“I have a better understanding of how I am able to interact with my child.”
“This is a great way to bring parents into the classroom to enjoy and take part in their child’s learning.”
“Very valuable for helping children learn in and out of the classroom.”
