This is a free public research talk and an information session about the community toad monitoring project on Haida Gwaii. Everyone is welcome!
Location: Sarah’s longhouse, Gaw Tlagée, Old Massett. Changed venue due to capacity issues at the old venue (old venue was Delkatla Nature Centre).
Date: Fri April 22nd, 7pm.
Roseanna Gamlen-Greene is a PhD student at UBC (graduating in April 2022) and a National Geographic Explorer. She has been studying toads and frogs on Haida Gwaii since 2017. She is very excited to come back to Haida Gwaii this year to share the results of five years of research and talk with community members about what her results mean for the conservation of the only indigenous amphibian on Haida Gwaii, the toad (english name: Western Toad).
In this talk, Roseanna will be sharing the results from her PhD thesis titled “The ecology, distribution and population genetics of amphibians on Haida Gwaii”. She will share the science as well as some cool videos & photos, and also provide information about the volunteer-led community toad monitoring program that is starting – which anyone can sign up to.
Light snacks will be provided afterwards and there will be time to stay and ask questions and talk for a while after the talk. The research talk will be from 7-7:30, information about the toad monitoring project from 7:30-7:40, and questions and socializing with snacks will follow.
This event is limited to 75 people because of COVID.
Roseanna will also be doing a research talk in the southern end of Haida Gwaii in May – location and date TBD – so if you live in the south end, don’t worry, a toad talk will be coming your way! Also, Roseanna will be on island until at least May 23rd, and would be happy to talk to anyone about her research.
The volunteer training session for the community toad monitoring project in the north end will be on Sunday April 24th at 11am, at a toad breeding site 20min south of Masset. Email haidagwaiitoads@gmail.com to sign up for training and get the exact location! Also here is the event page for the training: https://fb.me/e/4AOT0sbm1 See less
