Do You Grow Food? Here is an opportunity learn how to
improve your soil.
The Graham Island East Coast Farmer’s Institute is planning a two day workshop for food producers and food gardeners on Saturday and Sunday November 9th and 10th, and possibly Monday afternoon farm visits.
The goal is to help food
producers become more climate resilient through soil management practices that build organic matter and increase nutrient and moisture retention.
Local food producers and gardeners were eligible to take soil samples (this was done before Oct 13th) and have them analyzed before the workshop, the cost of which will be covered by the project. A visiting Agrologist, Matt Kyriakides, will help decipher the results and work with producers individually and as a group to determine helpful soil building approaches.
On Saturday afternoon and evening the Agrologist and the group will discuss basic soil science and share approaches and solutions to local soil issues using the soil test results. The second day will be a farm visit day where we will look at
various local farms and discuss soil differences, challenges and solutions.
Workshop at Tlell Firehall
The workshop will start at 3:30 pm on Saturday at the Tlell firehall with dinner served at 6:00 and will continue to 8:30 pm. Sunday field visits will start at 10:00 am. and Monday afternoon. Gardeners and farmers are welcome to attend whether you submit a soil test or not.
