Dr. Pierre-Yves Daoust: “Right whales on the east coast – An unusual, worrisome mortality event”
Stu Crawford: “Fungi of Haida Gwaii”
In summer and fall 2017, a total of 12 North Atlantic right whales, a highly endangered species, were found dead in the Gulf of St. Lawrence, where they had rarely been seen before. This represented more than 2% of the current population. What happened?? Dr. Daoust is a wildlife pathologist from Prince Edward Island who led the necropsies on these whales.
CHILD CARE: There will be a classroom beside the Masset Lectures available to be used for child care, but it is up to parents to arrange for whatever supervision is appropriate. There might not be a TV in the room, please bring a laptop if it is needed.
UPCOMING SCHEDULE
We are still working on the schedule for the rest of this season of Masset Lectures. Are you interested in giving a talk? Let me know!
ABOUT US
The Masset Lectures are an ongoing lecture series where community members volunteer to present a lecture on a topic of their expertise, or on a topic that they wish to learn more about. This is an opportunity to learn from each other, and to support each other in our own learning.
TOPICS
Anything relevant to life on Haida Gwaii, including natural history, human history, culture, local foods, outdoor activities, and practical skills.
FORMAT
Each session includes two different lectures by two different people, with a short break for refreshments between. Each lecture ideally includes a 10 to 30 minute presentation, a discussion period, and a hands-on activity that supplements the lecture. However, the exact format of each lecture is flexible to meet the needs of the topic and of the presenter.
