“The Aliens Among Us“ with Linda McCann (Smithsonian Institute) and Vanessa Hodes (DFO)

There will be snacks. Bring your own mug if you want a beverage.

CHILD CARE: The classroom beside the Masset Lectures is available to be used for child care, but it is up to parents to arrange for whatever supervision is appropriate. There is a TV and DVD player in the room.

This exciting lecture is being brought to us in collaboration with the Council of the Haida Nation, Gwaii Haanas, and Fisheries and Oceans Canada.

Linda McCann is a Research Biologist for the Smithsonian Institution:
What makes a species invasive? Why should you care? Learn how you can help prevent the spread of aliens in our oceans and more about the Smithsonian’s marine invasive species programs!

Vanessa Hodes is an Aquatic Research Technician for Fisheries and Oceans Canada:
Where are the aliens around Haida Gwaii? DFO has been monitoring the spread of invasive tunicates in BC for the past decade and on-island since 2014. Learn what we have found and more about DFO’s aquatic invasive species monitoring program.

In addition to the exciting lectures, there will also be microscopes and examples of the beautiful yet nasty tunicates that have invaded Masset.
